Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Harlesden
Gardeners Harlesden is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our workers, customers, visitors and the wider public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks, maintaining safe systems of work and promoting a positive safety culture in everything we do.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We aim to prevent injury and ill health arising from our work activities. To achieve this, Gardeners Harlesden will identify and manage hazards associated with gardening, landscaping and related services. We will consult with workers, provide suitable training and supervision, and ensure that appropriate resources are available to meet our health and safety objectives.
All work will be planned and carried out in line with relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice and industry guidance. We will review this policy on a regular basis to keep it up to date with changes in our work and in legal requirements.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the management of Gardeners Harlesden. Management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, that risks are assessed and controlled, and that safe working procedures are developed and followed.
Supervisors and team leaders must make sure that workers under their direction understand their responsibilities, are competent for the tasks they perform and have access to necessary equipment and personal protective equipment. They must monitor working practices and take action where unsafe conditions or behaviours are identified.
All workers have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow instructions, use equipment correctly, wear suitable protective equipment and promptly report hazards, incidents or near misses.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any garden or site, Gardeners Harlesden will assess the risks associated with the tasks to be carried out. This includes considering access and egress, uneven ground, vegetation, weather conditions, traffic, members of the public, pets and any specific site hazards such as ponds, steps, loose paving or overhanging branches.
From this assessment, we will adopt safe systems of work tailored to the site and the nature of the gardening tasks. Where necessary, work may be rescheduled or adapted to avoid unacceptable risk. Workers will be briefed on hazards and control measures before work begins and throughout the job if conditions change.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
Gardeners Harlesden will select tools and machinery that are suitable for the task and maintain them in a safe condition. All powered equipment, such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and chainsaws, will be inspected regularly and serviced as required by the manufacturer’s instructions.
Only trained and competent persons are permitted to use specialist equipment. Equipment will be used strictly in accordance with operating instructions. Guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed. When working near buildings, vehicles, boundaries or public areas, additional care will be taken to control flying debris, noise and vibration.
Personal Protective Equipment
We will provide appropriate personal protective equipment for our gardening activities. This may include protective footwear, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and weather-appropriate garments. Respiratory protection may be used where there is a risk from dust, fumes or other airborne contaminants.
Workers are required to use the protective equipment provided, to look after it properly and to report any damage or defects so that items can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Chemicals, Fertilisers and Green Waste
Where Gardeners Harlesden uses chemicals such as weed killers, pesticides or specialist fertilisers, they will be stored, handled, diluted and applied in accordance with product instructions and applicable safety standards. Risk assessments will consider potential effects on workers, customers, pets, wildlife and the environment.
We will minimise the use of hazardous substances wherever reasonably practicable and consider low impact alternatives when suitable. Green waste, soil, cuttings and other materials will be managed safely to avoid manual handling injuries, contamination, obstruction and fire risks.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening and landscaping work can involve lifting, carrying, digging, cutting and repetitive movements. Gardeners Harlesden will plan tasks to reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries. This includes using appropriate tools, mechanical aids and team lifting techniques where necessary.
Workers will be encouraged to use safe postures, take reasonable breaks, rotate tasks where possible and speak up if they feel that any load or task is beyond their capability. Heavy items will be broken down into smaller loads whenever practicable.
Working Outdoors and Environmental Conditions
Outdoor work exposes gardeners to changing weather and environmental conditions. Gardeners Harlesden will take account of heat, cold, rain, wind and reduced daylight when planning work. Workers will be encouraged to stay hydrated, use sun protection, wear suitable clothing and take shelter if conditions become extreme or unsafe.
Consideration will be given to slip and trip risks arising from wet grass, mud, ice, tools and cables. Work may be postponed or rescheduled if conditions present an unreasonable risk to safety.
Customer and Public Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors and members of the public while we are working. Gardeners Harlesden will organise work areas to minimise access by others, using barriers, signs or verbal warnings where appropriate. Tools and materials will be kept as tidy as possible, and trip hazards will be reduced.
Engines will not be left running unnecessarily, and equipment will never be left unattended in a way that allows unauthorised use. Care will be taken around parked vehicles, garden structures, ornaments and neighbouring properties to avoid damage and nuisance.
Incident Reporting and Policy Review
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported to management at the earliest opportunity. Gardeners Harlesden will investigate incidents to identify causes and take action to prevent recurrence. Lessons learned will be shared with workers and, where appropriate, reflected in revised procedures and training.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur in our work activities, equipment or legal requirements. Our aim is continual improvement in the way we manage risk and protect everyone affected by our gardening services.
